A familiar face, a calm routine, and time for the family too

Living with dementia is easier with the same friendly face each visit. Helping Hands offers one-to-one companionship for people living with dementia in Dorchester and the surrounding villages, in their own home or in a care home. Lorna is a Dementia Friend and has supported families through every stage, from early memory loss to later care.

How we can help

  • The same companion each visit, so nothing feels strange
  • Gentle conversation, reminiscence and favourite activities
  • Meals, drinks and light help around the home
  • Walks, outings and appointments with someone alongside
  • Reassurance for the family, with an honest update after each visit
  • Support that adjusts as needs change

Who we can help

  • People living with dementia at home who would enjoy regular company
  • Families who live away and worry about a parent on their own
  • Care home residents who need one-to-one time
  • Partners and carers who need a break (see our respite support)

As one family put it: “Lorna became part of the family in looking after my mother. She gave Mum the best possible life as she slipped into the world of dementia.”
