Sailing into Spring – A Day on the Freedom Boat with Helping Hands

On 24th April, the Helping Hands team—Lorna, Abby, Zoe, and Di—set out for a very special day with clients Jane, Isobel, Anthony, Susan, Gillian, and Clare. The destination? A scenic afternoon trip aboard the Freedom Boat, setting sail from Weymouth Harbour to explore the stunning Dorset coastline.

The aim of the outing was simple yet powerful: to give our clients the opportunity to get out and about, experiencing both land and sea in a fun, safe, and inclusive environment. Thanks to the amazing volunteers at The Freedom Boat—a charitable project designed to provide boat trips for people with disabilities and other restrictions—this was made possible in the most unforgettable way.

As we cruised along the coast of Portland, we were treated to breathtaking views, sightings of seabirds, and even some curious local seals! Each client also had the chance to take the wheel and steer the boat, a truly empowering and joyful experience for everyone on board.

We enjoyed refreshments brought from home, shared lots of laughter, and created memories we’ll all treasure. It was a wonderful blend of adventure, fresh air, and companionship.

A huge thank you to the volunteers of The Freedom Boat project, whose mission is to make the sea accessible to all. Their work is entirely reliant on donations and fundraising, and we are so grateful for their dedication.
