Supporting Independence Through Friendship: Inside Companion Care in Dorchester
The Heart of Companion Care: More Than Just a Helping Hand

Hi, I’m Lorna from Helping Hands in Dorchester. Alongside my lovely team members Abby and Zoe, we provide something a little different from traditional care services. We don’t offer personal or medical care — no washing, dressing, or medication. What we do offer is just as important: time, conversation, laughter, and support through genuine companionship.
What Is Companion Care, Really?
Sometimes people confuse what we do with personal care services, but at Helping Hands, our focus is on the emotional side of well-being. We’re here for the chats over tea, the walks through Dorchester, help with a bit of light cooking, or even tackling those “I’ll-do-it-later” bits like sorting out paperwork. We’re about being there — not just doing.
Independence with a Safety Net
Our clients are independent people who simply want a bit of extra support to keep living life on their own terms. Whether it’s going out to social events, getting to appointments, or just having a regular friendly face pop by, our role is to enable, not take over. We believe everyone deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued — and that’s the heart of what we do.
Why We Spend Time (Real Time) with You
One thing that really sets us apart? We only work with clients for a minimum of three hours per visit. That gives us the time to build a relationship and really get to know the person we’re supporting — not just their needs, but their stories, routines, and preferences. Many of our clients choose longer visits or multiple days each week, because it becomes something they look forward to. And truthfully? So do we.

Our Team, Our People
Abby, Zoe, and I genuinely love what we do. Each of us brings something a little different to the table, but what we all share is a passion for people. We’re not rushing in and out — we’re sitting down and staying for a while. That’s how trust is built, and it’s why so many of our clients feel more like extended family.
Let’s Chat (Because That’s What We Do Best)
If you or someone you know could use some extra support — not medical care, but good old-fashioned company, encouragement, and practical help — we’d love to talk. Whether it’s for yourself, a family member, or a neighbour, feel free to reach out. At Helping Hands, we believe everyone deserves connection, companionship, and a sense of belonging.
Warmly,
Lorna
